Azita’s Experience

While learning about the Lugano, Switzerland program through her older brother, Azita was already a fan of the Lugano program before studying abroad at Virginia Tech. After discovering that the credits would align perfectly with her major, and would allow her to graduate on time, she was determined to go on this program.

While being away from family and friends at home for an entire semester proved difficult, it also allowed Azita to step out of her comfort zone, learn a lot from both people and a different country, as well as graduate on time with an incredibly memorable experience from her time at Pamplin. “You learn a lot about people. Not having much alone time encourages you to have an inclusive mindset and be open to new opportunities.”

Azita’s favorite memory from the trip was hiking Cinqueterre in Italy. The breath-taking views and full day of traveling with four other students who barely knew each other, ended up as one of the best experiences she’s had, along with becoming close friends with her hiking group by the end of the trip.

Studying abroad has now provided Azita with an amazing storytelling experience during job interviews and has given her experience in overcoming situations she wasn’t prepared for outside of the classroom.

Key Advice From Azita on Studying Abroad

  • Immerse yourself with the culture and areas you are in. Take pictures, taste different food and step out of your comfort zone.
  • Live in the moment. Studying abroad is a once in a lifetime opportunity as traveling with other students your age may be different than with family or with friends. Maximize every opportunity to take in the trip.
