Real Estate Development in Qatar

Pre-departure lectures: Tuesdays, 6:00-7:30pm, January 21 - March 3, 2020

Students will attend a series of pre-departure lectures before traveling to Doha, Qatar to participate in cultural events, site tours and meetings designed to increase their familiarity with the opportunities and challenges involved in developing, owning and managing real estate in one of the more dynamic real estate markets in the world – Qatar. Emphasis will be placed on the globalization of the real estate industry and the factors contributing to Qatar’s emergence as an attractive location for capital deployment. Attention will also be devoted to efforts made to enhance Qatar’s image through investments in urban planning, infrastructure, iconic architecture, environmental sustainability, and global events.

Learning objectives: after the completion of the study abroad program, you will be able to:
  • Discuss the factors contributing to the globalization of the real estate capital market
  • Analyze the potential risks associated with investing in real estate in emerging markets
  • Evaluate the advantages and disadvantages of real estate-based economic development strategies
  • Assess the long-term stability and attractiveness of Doha and Qatar to real estate investors
  • Compare/contrast real estate development practices employed in the U.S. and Qatar.

Preparing

You should ensure that you have the proper vaccinations for this program. This can be done through the University's recommended travel clinic (Intravene), a county health department, or your family physician. Your family physician usually does not have the more specialized vaccines and should refer you to the county health department. You can see a list of recommended vaccinations and other health information at the CDC travel website.Each student must have a valid passport from their home country. You can apply for a passport at the Acceptance Facility in Squires Student Center, the Blacksburg Post Office (540-552-2751) at the University Mall with appointment or at the Montgomery County Clerk's Office at the Christiansburg Courthouse (540-382-5760), no appointment required. You can get passport photos at most local pharmacies.

The program fee is $3,700.  It includes airfare, lodging, group travel, 7 breakfasts, 2 dinners, cultural excursions and local transportation.  Virginia Tech tuition, fees, and other costs are noted below. A non-refundable deposit of $500, payable online, is due after acceptance into program, with the remainder due January 10th.

Financial Aid and Scholarships

Your financial aid eligibility may apply to this program. You must submit a Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) to the University Financial Aid Office. Go to Scholarship Central for more information. Pamplin also lists Pamplin College of Business study abroad scholarships here.

In addition, you must submit the study abroad cost documentation form to the Global Education Office at the International Affairs building, 526 Prices Fork Road, room 131. Another great resource is Pamplin’s International Program’s Funding Opportunities Page.

Due to prepayment on items such as air and lodging, billing may not be in sync with financial aid payouts. Please be prepared to pay costs in advance and be reimbursed with any financial aid payouts later.

The application deadline is January 6, but there are limited spaces, so apply early.
