Global FIRE: Brazil: Global Explorations in Brazilian Business and Culture
Tentative Dates: March 6-15, 2020
Global Explorations in Brazilian Business and Culture is an experiential study abroad program in the Brazilian state of Mata Grosso. The purpose is to provide exposure to various Brazilian business environments, as well as their culture. Brazil is one of the 10 largest economies in the world. Financial stability and economic growth have led to greater consumption of goods and services, which have also led to the creation of many new small businesses with an eye on sustaining the vast natural ecosystem in Brazil.
Additional Components:
Class at VT throughout the spring semester
Travel from US to Mato Grasso, Brazil for 1 week
Guest speakers daily at Instituto Federal do Mato Grasso during the week in Brazil.
Two ecotourism activities: Pantanal and Chapada dos Guimarães
Cultural activities will include dancing and dining customs
Students are required to keep a journal during the program
This Program:
- Introduces students to a new language (i.e. Portuguese).
Provides an overview of the social, cultural and economic aspects of Brazil.
- Provides an understanding of the concept of sustainable business development in Brazil and how it may be accomplished.
Helps gain cultural and international competence, so you feel confident in an international setting.
- Gives team building experience and skills to accomplish an assigned task successfully.
- Gives an understanding and appreciation of cultural differences and how other socieites operate.
- Gives an understanding of negotiating through a cultural and social view point.

Preparing
Each student must have a valid passport from their home country. You can apply for a passport at the Acceptance Facility in Squires Student Center, the Blacksburg Post Office (540-552-2751) at the University Mall with appointment or at the Montgomery County Clerk's Office at the Christiansburg Courthouse (540-382-5760), no appointment required. You can get passport photos at most local pharmacies.
You should insure that you have the proper vaccinations for this program. This can be done through the University's recommended travel clinic (Intravene), a county health department, or your family physician. Your familiy physician usually does not have the more specialized vaccines and should refer you to the county health department. The program fee includes all activities and business site visits, 24-hour assistance from the company team, full-time bilingual guide, breakfast daily, all in-country transportation, all tips, all homes stays, and airline tickets.

Financial Aid and Scholarships
Your financial aid eligibility may apply to this program. You must submit a Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) to the University Financial Aid Office. Go to Scholarship Central for more information. Pamplin also lists Pamplin College of Business study abroad scholarships here.
In addition, you must submit the study abroad cost documentation form to the Global Education Office at the International Affairs building, 526 Prices Fork Road, room 131. Another great resource is Pamplin’s International Program’s Funding Opportunities Page.
Due to prepayment on items such as air and lodging, billing may not be in sync with financial aid payouts. Please be prepared to pay costs in advance and be reimbursed with any financial aid payouts later.
The application deadline is January 24, but there are limited spaces, so apply early.
Prerequisites: None. However, you must be enrolled in HTM/MGT 2314 in spring 2020, or have previously taken the course in Fall 2019 or Winter 2019-2020.
