Extra-curricular activities are designed to provide opportunities for students to experience the American culture more fully and intentionally.
The Blacksburg Farmers Market is a local, family-friendly gathering place in downtown Blacksburg featuring farmers of locally grown produce and meats, alongside artisans of baked goods and handmade crafts.
Steppin' Out features two days of over 200 artists and crafts people from around the United States selling unique handcrafted items – jewelry, pottery, textiles, metal work, basketry, stained & fused glass, yard art, fine art, furniture, toys, artisan foods and so much more! And don't forget to check out the local merchants, restaurants, and bands late in to the night.
Experience a great American pastime watching the Salem Red Sox play against the Winston-Salem Dash. Both teams are Minor League Baseball teams- one from Salem, Virginia and the other from Winston Salem, North Carolina.
Virginia Tech has 18 main sports facilities on campus. The most famous is Lane Stadium home to Virginia Tech Hokies Football.
Completed in 1965, Lane Stadium/Worsham Field has gone through numerous changes, renovations and additions. But through it all, it has always been regarded as one of the finest places to watch – and toughest places for opponents to play – a college football game.
The New River, part of the Ohio River watershed, is about 360 mi (515 km) long and is one of the five oldest rivers in the world geologically. The river flows through the U.S. states of North Carolina, Virginia, and West Virginia before joining with the Gauley River to form the Kanawha River at the town of Gauley Bridge, WV.
Via the New River Junction, a lazy inner tube drift down a mile of this pristine river cupped in a tree-lined mountain valley provides the perfect escape from a hot summer day.
This highly scenic, 4-mile round-trip trail meanders along a shaded mountain creek to a 66-foot waterfall within Jefferson National Forest. Cascades Falls is low to moderate difficulty and native trout fishing is available in the Little Stony Creek.
There is a picnicking area, water hydrant for filling water bottles, and accessible restrooms at the beginning of the trail.
As one of the most photographed spots on the Appalachian Trail, McAfee Knob in the Roanoke Valley in Virginia's Blue Ridge is on the bucket list for hikers from around the world. The knob is located atop Catawba Mountain with an elevation of 3,197 feet and is one of the highlights of the Appalachian Trail.
With its stunning, 270-degree panoramic views of the surrounding valley and mountains, along with its signature ledge that has become a popular place for photos, McAfee Knob should be included in any trip that includes hiking in Virginia's Blue Ridge., as well as being recognized by USA Today Travel as one of the most spectacular hikes in the United States!
After working up an appetite on the mountain, a local favorite, The Homeplace, is a great way to end the day; they serve a menu of regional southern dishes, family-style, in a home built in 1907.
