The Gilman Program aims to diversify U.S. undergraduate students who study and intern abroad who might otherwise not consider these unique and valuable opportunities due to financial constraints.

  • Advisors have until October 8, 2019 to certify Spring 2020, Summer 2020 early applications, and Fall 2020/Academic Year 2020-2021 applications.

Applicants who are studying a critical need language while abroad can apply for a supplemental award of up to $3,000, for a combined total of $8,000. In addition to receiving the highly competitive award, recipients of the Critical Need Language Award will be offered the opportunity to evaluate and certify their language skills acquired during their program through a recognized oral proficiency language test. This test and the results will serve as both an evaluation measure of the award and as a credential for the award recipient. To be considered for this award, you will need to submit a short supplemental essay that describes how you intend to improve your critical need language skills, your motivations for doing so, and how your study of the language relates to your academic and professional goals.
